G’day,

Some users of our Australian English dictionary files have asked for more Aussie slang to be included.

To get the ball rolling I will build a secondary dictionary for OpenOffice.org which will contain Aussie slang. Further dictionaries for other applications will be built based on user demand.

Add a comment to this blog with the words you would like to see included.

Guidelines

Check the spelling of the word where possible. Slang dictionaries are available in book stores.
Using Google, select Pages From Australia and check for common usage.
If someone else submits a word you do not agree with then dispute the word (but be nice about it).

When a sufficient number of suggestions have been received I will consolidate the suggestions for people to comment on and then include in the next version of the dictionary.

Australian dictionary spell check test

As the creator and maintainer of the Australian English dictionary files (used in such projects as OpenOffice.org, Firefox 2, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Internet Explorer/ieSpell, Opera, Aspell and other projects) I decided to test the spell check feature of WordPress.

For the test words: colour, color, customise, and customize, all words were shown as correct.

For myself this is not correct. I use the word “colour” and not “color”. Whilst both the “ise” and “ize” spellings are correct, I prefer to use the “ise” spelling variation.

The next test is to see if the spell check feature available with browsers will allow me to spell check my work to my satisfaction.

Opera – Opera was not able to spell check the post. Quirky behaviour.
Firefox 2 – In-line spell checking worked as desired. Quirky behaviour.
Internet Explorer/ieSpell – Can spell check post. Quirky behaviour.

Overall from this limited test, Firefox appears to produce the best results in terms of spell checking, and also the quirky behaviour was slightly less than with the other browsers.
